Professor Helen Cross is The Prince of Wales’s Chair of Childhood Epilepsy and Head of the Developmental Neuroscience Programme at UCL-Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Neurology Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust, London and Young Epilepsy, Lingfield, UK.
Professor Cross qualified in Medicine from Birmingham University, trained in Paediatrics in Birmingham and subsequently came to London to train in Paediatric Neurology, where she undertook a PhD. She became consultant at Great Ormond Street in 1996, and following an academic track became professor at UCL in 2007, appointed to the Prince of Wales’s Chair of Childhood Epilepsy in 2008. Her research has been targeted at improving outcomes in early onset epilepsy, specifically in assessing the role of surgery and ketogenic diet. She is Treasurer of the International League Against Epilesy 2017-2021 (Secretary General 2013-2017), Clinical Advisor to the National Children’s Epilepsy Surgery Service, Chair of the BPNA (British Paediatric Neurology Association) Research Committee and Chair of the Neurosciences Clinical Study Group of the Clinical Research Network (Children). She holds NIHR Senior Investigator status 2016-2020. She was awarded the Ambassador for Epilepsy Award from the ILAE/IBE (International League Against Epilepsy/International Bureau for Epilepsy) in 2007 and Officer, Order of the British Empire for services to children with epilepsy in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. She holds an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Gothenburg (2014), and the University of Tartu (2013).
