Profil

Nouchine Hadjikhani är läkare, medicine doktor, PhD och gästprofessor vid Gillbergcentrum. För närvarande innehar hon en docentur vid Harvard Medical School. Hon har ägnat sig åt hjärnforskning sedan 1993, och har använt sig av neuroanatomi, histologi, PET, fMRI, DTI, MEG såväl som beteendemetoder för att studera normala och avvikande hjärnor. Hennes ursprungliga forskningsintresse rörde det visuella systemet, och hon började studera denna aspekt vid autismspektrumtillstånd genom att undersöka hur det visuella cortex är organiserat såväl som ansiktsperception. Hennes anatomiska och funktionella studier har visat avvikelser i de så kallade “spegelneuron-områdena” (som tillåter oss att härma och mentalt simulera andras känslor, beteenden, och rörelser) hos unga vuxna med högfungerande autism. Hon arbetar för närvarande med att förstå de neurala baserna för bristerna i social instinkt inom AST, och för att utveckla neurala biomarkörer som kan bidra till att objektifiera effekten av olika behandlingsapproacher, både beteendeorienterade och farmakologiska sådana. Hennes senaste fynd demonstrerade att den affektiva empatin är opåverkad hos individer med autism. För närvarande fokuserar hennes forskning på emotionell kognition inom autism, tillsammans med vilken inverkan blick/blickkontakt har i hur ansikten bearbetas.
