On 29th September 2010, it was decided that the Gillberg Neuropsychiatry Centre (GNC) would be founded within the Sahlgrenska Academy at University of Gothenburg. The centre was established at its current location at Kungsgatan 12 in Gothenburg as early as 1st February 2011. The centre is being led by Professor Christopher Gillberg, along with Professor Eva Billstedt. Some 80 researchers are currently affiliated with the centre, which focuses on research concerning neurodevelopment and neuropsychiatry, particularly autism spectrum disorder, ADHD and anorexia nervosa across the lifecycle. In its first year the GNC organised several notable events. The GNC in Gothenburg was inaugurated by HRH Queen Silvia and 2011 also saw the inauguration of the GNC in Kōchi, Japan.

Since 2011 the Gillberg Neuropsychiatry Centre has been organising the annual Birgit Olsson lecture. The lecture is given by an international authority in the field of one of the centre’s preferred research areas: anorexia nervosa, ADHD and autism spectrum disorder.

In 2015 a new series of lectures were instituted, ”The Mary Coleman lecture”, which will be held every two years by a prominent researcher within the field of autism spectrum disorder or related conditions. The first lecture was held by Professor Mary Coleman herself. The second Mary Coleman lecture will take place in 2017 and Professor Christopher Gillberg will talk on “Autism from A to Z”.
