Darko Sarovic

  • M.D., B.A.
  • PhD student at the Gillberg Neuropsychiatry Center, Inst. of neuroscience and physiology, University of Gothenburg
  • Radiology Resident at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital

Research interests

Darko has had a long-standing interest in neurobiology, child development, and behaviour. During his medical studies he conducted research on the neurobiological effects of maternal deprivation in rats. It was a way of combining those research areas with the aim of investigating the interaction between the environment and the development of the brain, and the potential ways that such an interaction can lead to healthy and unhealthy psychological behaviours. These interests led him to his current PhD, where he is investigating autism using brain imaging methods, specifically magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG). Much of his current focus is centred around developing a model for the pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental disorders, improving methods for classification using biological data, and finding functional biomarkers.

Darko completed his medical studies at the University of Belgrade, Serbia. Upon returning to Sweden, he worked at the clinic of child and adolescent psychiatry in Borås, and did a clinical internship at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital. He is currently undertaking a residency in radiology at the same hospital, and doing a PhD in psychiatry at the Gillberg Neuropsychiatry Centre, University of Gothenburg. In parallel with his clinical internship and PhD, he completed a Bachelor of Psychology, with emphasis on child and adolescent psychology, and he is currently studying towards a Bachelor of Economics. His PhD project, “Neurophysiological markers for autism”, uses MRI and MEG with the aim of finding useful biomarkers that can aid in diagnostics, hopefully allowing for diagnosis before behavioural symptoms become apparent, as well as to find eventual endophenotypes that can be used to evaluate the effects of pharmacologic and therapeutic treatment. In addition to his academic career, Darko is a self-trained professional sprinter who has competed for the national athletics team and he holds a national record in the 100m sprint. Besides his general interest in neuroscience, he is also interested in sports science.
